Does Renting Make Sense?

January 27, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

Writing Your Money: The Missing Manual has been intense. I’ve spent a ton of time researching personal finance topics ranging from buying a car to funding a 401(k) to the relationship between money and happiness. My research has reinforced some of my convictions (index funds are the best investment for 99% of personal investors, for instance) but has toppled others. One of my beliefs that

How to Talk with Your Spouse About Money

January 26, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

This is a guest post from Sierra Black, a long-time GRS reader and the author of ChildWild, a blog where she writes about frugality, sustainable living, and getting her kids to eat kale.
Talking about money is one of the great taboos of our culture. I know more about my friends’ sex lives than I do about their bank statements. Many of us find it hard to discuss finances under the best circumstan

Great Lessons from Great Men

January 25, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

Because I write a personal finance blog, I read a lot of books about money. I’ll be honest: they’re usually pretty boring. Sure, they can tell you how to invest in bonds or how to find the latest loophole in the tax code. But most of them lack a certain something: the human element.
Recently I’ve begun to read a different kind of money book in my spare time. I’ve discovered

Learning to Use Money as a Tool

January 22, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

It’s pretty clear by now that I have a different relationship with money than when I started Get Rich Slowly. I’m by no means perfect with the stuff, but I’ve become firmly entrenched in the camp that sees money as a tool. (I used to see it only as a means to instant gratification.)
Here’s a tiny example.
Taking a page out of Trent’s book, Kris has been on a crock pot

Daily Links: Extreme Editing Edition

January 18, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

Haha. Here I thought that once I finished my manuscript I’d magically have more time to write at Get Rich Slowly. That’ll happen soon, but I’m not there yet. Turns out editing is just as much work as writing — it’s just a different kind of work.
I have to edit all 14 chapters of Your Money: The Missing Manual by next Monday, which is a huge task, especially when you c

Break Out of Your Comfort Zone to Achieve Success

January 18, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

This is a guest post from Flexo of Consumerism Commentary. Flexo is embarking on a ten-day, ten-blog tour. Previously at Get Rich Slowly, he’s shared how to be CFO of your own life.
Humans are wired to seek comfort, and as a result much of daily life is focused around familiar patterns and habits. When something threatens to break those habits, we feel uncomfortable and nervous. These negati

This guest post from Lars is part of a new feature here at Get Rich Slowly. Every Sunday will include a reader story (in the new “reader stories” category). Some will be general “how I did X” stories, and others will be examples of how a GRS reader achieved financial success.
I got married last month. It was a bit of a whirlwind romance — at the beginning of 2009, we&

A Sneak Peek at Your Money: The Missing Manual

January 15, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

I did it!
I finally finished the manuscript for Your Money: The Missing Manual; I e-mailed the last chapter to my editor at 9:10 this morning.
This book was a lot of work. I started writing it on 23 September 2009 at 12:27 p.m. Over the next 115 days, I gained fifteen pounds. (I actually gained eighteen, but I’ve lost three since the start of the year.) The final manuscript contains 125,244

The Art of the Potluck

January 15, 2010 by J.D.  |  Comments Off

This is a guest post from my wife. Today’s my deadline for turning in the manuscript for Your Money: The Missing Manual (which has an official cover now!). I still have to finish the retirement chapter, so I’m hunkered down in the word mines. While I’m spending all of my time at the office, Kris came to the rescue with an article about one of our favorite frugal pastimes: potluck
