Although some natural gas customers are receiving a bit of relief in home heating costs this winter, it’s still expensive to very expensive to heat a home for 5 or 6 months out of the year regardless of what source of fuel you use. American Consumer News has previously discussed some strategies to cut back on home heating costs, such as winterizing your home and getting a digital thermostat, but there’s another tool that you might consider in your money saving home heating arsenal—a portable home heater.
Most of us would never think about setting our home thermostats to 60 or 65 degrees, but what if you kept most of the house relatively cool and only heated the rooms that you actually spend time in. That way, you would only pay to heat the parts of the homes that you use the most.
The way to accomplish this is through the use of a portable home heater. Purchase a few space heaters from companies such as Honeywell and put them in the rooms that you use most. Let the other rooms that you don’t make use of stay cooler and stay warm in the rooms that you do use.
Typically home-heaters will run between $25 and $75 depending upon the model, features, and heat output. You could pick-up two or three space heaters and use them throughout your home. If you cut back from setting your thermostat from 70 degrees to 62 degrees, you’ll probably save around $450 per year in home heating costs. There will be some costs in running the home heats, probably around $150, but it’s much cheaper to power those devices in a few rooms than to heat your whole house.
These devices probably aren’t for everyone, but for the frugal family that wants to save some money, they’re an excellent option to reduce home heating costs in addition to practicing good home winterization techniques and sealing your home.
